The Father of Modern Drama

1828-1906 Henrik Ibsen was a Norwegian playwright & poet. Also the author of the play my class is reading, “A Doll’s House”. Cursed with a poor childhood, Henrik moved to Oslo at the age of 22 to pursue an education at an irregular school. However, that year he was able to write two plays which were The Burial Mound and Catiline. At that point in his life, he was headed downhill into a big pot of success with his plays. His alias, “The father of Realism” described his significant style in his work. Responsible for over 150 plays, the Norwegian people celebrate him as a national symbol.

As for the title of the play, “A Doll’s House”, I find it to be ironic. A Doll’s House is a critical portrayal of marriage as a kind of prison for women. So, why mislead the people & make them believe the family in this play lives a perfect life controlled by a little girl’s imagination in a doll playing session by having that title? It still doesn’t add up in my mind, but I’ll wait & see. The first act leaves me with a lot of questions & thoughts. It reveals just enough to leave you in mystery about the kind of person Nora is. So it’s still too early for me to decide on what the title might may mean. Now, I’ll play the waiting game and let the story unfold.
